At 17 years old, Steven Ortiz is a role model at amplifying possibility into reality. Spending absolutely no money, he now owns a Porsche.

What Steven did is find people who needed what he had, and he offered it to them in exchange for what they had to offer. In these interesting economic times, it’s apparently entirely possible that a family might want to trade an expensive, two-seater sports car for a more roomy and utilitarian vehicle that meets their needs.

http://wcbstv.com/topstories/cell.phone.porsche.2.1817906.html

Steven first traded a free cell phone he’d been given for a better model.

Let me repeat that. Steven first traded a free cell phone he’d been given for a better model.

Now…why would somebody want to do that? Well, I can tell you that after my son recently lost the brand new iPhone 3GS I bought him for Christmas, we selected a more conventional cell phone with a more economical service plan in order to recoup the cost of that lost phone. There are probably lots of people out there with 2 or 3 or 4-year contracts that would like to downgrade their plans, and not pay for a new phone. Makes sense, right?

As we think about the value we are trying to create in our own lives, Steven’s story makes it clear that we can create enormous value in our own lives by creating value in the lives of others. And there are many, many ways to achieve that.

Sometimes we become blocked because we think we know how we must turn our dreamed of possibilities into reality. Or we think we know that certain possibilities only come from certain activities, or connections.

The truth is that the universe has more ways to deliver our dreams to us than we can count. Explore every new idea for its potential. Somewhere, the cosmic Powers That Be will laugh in delight when you discover a new path that has so far been hidden from all of us.

In a simple yet sweet ceremony, Michael and I were married on September 26th at Hammond’s Ferry in our hometown of North Augusta, SC on the Savannah River, just upriver from our neighborhood. In a quasi-elopement, we invited only our children (his daughter Alexis, 20, and friend Ray, and my son Zack, 19, with his girlfriend Katherine). We celebrated at Manuel’s Bread Cafe with prosecco, a lovely sparkling Italian wine, and a lovely dinner with the kids. A week later we embarked on a two-week tour of Italy, visiting such romantic places as Venice, Florence, Tuscany and Lake Como.

We re-said our vows at San Marlino church, a church high on a cliff that you can only reach by hiking a trail up the mountain. The last four days, we stayed at La Darsena (The Boathouse) in Tremezzo on Lake Como. The first day there, we took a ferry across the lake to Bellagio, and visited the Melzi estate. Melzi was the chancellor of Italy during Napoleon’s reign. We sat high up on the perfect lawn of this estate, and told each other Father Guido Sarducci jokes as we looked over the sparkling lake. (Remember the 5-Minute University?) We spoke in fake Italian accents for about a week after we got home. I’m happy to say we’re recovered from that now, but still suffering from having to leave that beautiful country behind.

Right at this moment, though, as I sit on the patio of my home in the beautiful Fall weather of our hometown, I can hear the church bells ringing the half hour across the river, and I think, “We’re not so far from Italy after all.”

Ciao, mios bellos.

Though you will find definitions of this term related to geography, philosophy and politics, I mean simply that a possibilist is someone who recognizes that all possibilities exist, though they may not yet have manifested* in this time/space. My own philosophy further adds that a possibilist is someone who believes these possibilities can be accessed and brought to life in our “real” world. And if I were to get really specific, a possibilist also believes that he or she is the conduit via which this process happens. A possibilist chooses which possibilities to amplify into reality, and then, using basic, innate skills, makes it happen.

Yes. Innate. These skills reside inside you, whether you’re currently exercising them or not. As I often say at my speaking engagements, human beings are the best designed Possibility Amplifiers in the universe. We’re so good at it, in fact, that we can even turn the impossible into reality, and if you pause a moment, I’m sure you can think of some things that humans used to think were impossible, but that are now part of our everyday lives.

So, let’s tighten up that definition of a possibilist: A possibilist believes that all possibilities are personally available, and once a specific possibility is chosen, the possibilist can amplify it into reality.

My editor always had trouble with the phrase “amplify into reality.” She said “we don’t amplify into.” And I would agree that historically we have not. But today we are. Today, we need a new turn of phrase that can capture our ability to take the tiniest thought or idea and make it a big, juicy, exciting reality. We didn’t use to say, “Earth’s orbit.” We thought the universe spun around the Earth. We didn’t used to say, “around the world.” We used to think the world was flat. We didn’t used to say, “remission.” Cancer killed us nearly every time. It’s time for a new vocabulary.

*I don’t really like to use the word “manifest,” because it’s been so overused. I like “amplify” because it’s a word that quantum physicists use to describe the process of quantum possibility becoming reality. If you have a better turn of phrase than “amplify into reality,” I would love to hear it. And so would my publisher. Just kidding! They don’t get to see the manuscript ’til next month!

Meanwhile, tune in next week for my post on how to become a possibilist. I’ll give you all my personal and counterintuitive secrets.

Wishing you every possibility! –K.

In a recent speech I gave to the members of the Latin Business Club at a recent awards ceremony, I shared with them the concept of saying, “Sure!” to propel their careers. I encouraged them to say “Sure!” when they were asked to take on new responsibility–even without pay.

Sound crazy? I’ve been promoted a dozen times in my career, and “Sure!” is one of the main reasons why. Although I might not have received a big enough title with the responsibility, or I got a lot more responsibility without pay, eventually the recognition and pay came to me because I was willing to step up first.

Here’s what I now know: the universe has about 100 million ways to deliver your desired outcome to you. You may not recognize it at first when it shows up, because you’ve crafted a vision of the delivery mechanism in your head, and it doesn’t match up. When you resist those sorts of offers and say “no” to them, you slow down the possibility amplification process dramatically. That resistance creates friction against your forward motion.

By letting go of your idea of the path, and instead following the markers the universe is providing, you will open yourself up to and be able to access more possibility. And that’s where success lies.

What’s the worst that can happen? You learn a lesson. Or you learn a new skill. Or you…get promoted!

The universe has so much in store for you. Let it come to you!
