Do you consider yourself a lucky or unlucky person? Or perhaps you don’t think about luck much at all, feeling that your opportunities mainly come to you through hard work, or determination.

Those who study luck, such as Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire and author of “The Luck Factor,” will tell you that your own behavior and state of mind will determine the amount of luck you experience. In fact, Wiseman believes that 90% of what happens in your life is “actually defined by the way you think.”

In other words, you will see or not see possibilities based on your own mindset. If you don’t even see the possibilities before you, you certainly will not be able to take advantage of them. And life begins to look like a string of bad luck.

So, what can you do to establish the right mindset and create your own luck by spotting more of the opportunities that are really available to you?

First, lighten up. Are you the kind of person who has a constant low level of stress and anxiety running through your life, that peaks periodically into full blown panic or frustration? This is not the mindset we’re looking for. Lay back. Relax. Have some fun. Really. It’s okay. Have faith that the universe is your partner and that events are unfolding as they should.

Second, trust your intuition. Do you make decisions based on what you think other people would decide in your shoes, or on how you believe they will think about you? Have you been in a situation when your gut told you one thing but you went with another, and you ended up regretting it? Let me be one of the dozens of people who have told you that you’re amazingly intelligent. Believe us. You don’t need to give away your power to choose. Your choices are good enough.

Third: Persevere, Pollyanna. Go ahead! Spend your time believing that everything is going to work out just fine. Wiseman says that unlucky people have a bleak view of the world, and expect things to always go wrong. What does it cost to give that up? Is it doing anything for you lately?

Fourth, says Wiseman, look for ways to turn your bad luck into good fortune. Have you ever gotten behind someone doing ten miles under the speed limit when you’re incredibly, horribly late? This happened to me the other day. At first I was very frustrated. I felt like passing her with a roar of my engine. But then I thought, “I bet this is another reminder from the universe to be patient.” So I relaxed, got off the poor woman’s tail, and accepted my situation. Around the next bend was a cop with a radar gun. And just like that, my bad luck turned into good luck.

In that example, both mindsets were available to me. I chose the good luck mindset. And you can, too.

I’m wishing you good luck, the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s day ahead, and every possibility! –K.
