Handling an Unexpected Bump in the Road

August 8th, 2011 · 6 Comments

Our cabin in the mountains

A week ago, I was sitting on the deck of a rental cabin in Maggie Valley, NC.  My husband and I went up for some R&R and so that I could heal after having my gallbladder removed a bit more than a week prior.

Most people have their gallbladders removed because they get a gallstone stuck in a bile duct, they get very uncomfortable very quickly, and they are scheduled into surgery right away.

I, in the other hand, had chronic biliary dyskinesia, which is when the gallbladder just doesn’t contract properly.  Translation: pain and nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms you don’t even want to hear about, that insidiously enter your life, little by little, getting worse and worse.

After I was finally diagnosed, I realized, looking back, that I had probably been suffering from this condition for at least two years.  I was always blaming it on something else: too much stress, too much travel, too much wine, driving too hard, not enough sleep, the ‘flu, etc.  Finally, the pain got so bad and so localized that it couldn’t be ignored anymore.

I moved from chronic dismissive mode to “OMG, something is tragically wrong with me!”

And thankfully so.  Because it made me stop.  It made me lay down the reins that I mistakenly thought were attached to a bridle around the entire head of the universe.

Are you holding on to such a set of reins?

Let go, let go, let go, LET GO!  The universe has got your back, your front, and both sides.  You are not the All Being, Master of Time, Space and Dimension.  (Thank you, Steve Martin.) You don’t have to be.  And neither do I.

You count on me to lift you up and remind you of your unending ability to turn possibility into reality, and today I’m here to remind you that you have lots and lots and lots of help!  You don’t have to do it all!

Surrender to the flow.  Open your fists.  Lay down the reins.  Give back to the universe what belongs to the universe to control and direct and assemble and arrange and assure, and pick up instead the tiny bundle which is yours.

It’s just today.  It’s just this hour. It’s just this minute.  It’s not the future.  It’s not the past.  It’s not controlling/helping/fixing other people.  It’s just you.  It’s just your happiness.  It’s just your health.  It’s just your moment.

Please.  Be in it.  It’s the only place to be. From this place, you will be your most powerful self, your most contributing self, your most caring self, your most creative self.

Are you feelin’ me?

Loving you like you are part of me–Kim

    Hi Kim,

Wow…that’s some story! And…yes…this is a welcome reminder for me to just let go.
By the way, anyone who’s had their gallbladder removed should be careful to take enzyme supplements daily…check it out.

As closely as you are connected to ‘spirit’ I a bit chagrined that you weren’t catching this in your meditations. That aside, I’m thankful you are on the road to recovery. Had you left, I would have lost a wonderful and resourceful Shadow friend, Pain is a great instructor, ask one who feels this every day. BC

Oh, BC, I’m not going anywhere. :) But you are right! Sometimes the outer world catches us all in its sticky web, and we forget that to which we are attached, and part of. In my case, I was completely connected on one level, and not remotely on another. But probably I’m not as advanced as you. Working on being Here. Now. Awake. Thanks for being my mentor and friend.

Hi Kim! Wow, what a ride! I hope you are recovering nicely and enjoying your new, more heathy moments. Thanks for the reminder to enjoy each iota of every moment…I’m doing so as I type, seeing the sun begin to set in Montana after a beautiful day in Glacier National Park. The Universe is amazing! Many blessings and healthy thoughts coming your way!
